Q. What is the Australian Standard, and how do I know if the variance in my tile is normal?
Australian Standards set dimensional tolerances for ceramic tiles. The applicable tolerance depends on the tile type, classification and manufacturing method.
For ceramic and porcelain tiles, AS 13006:2020 specifies classification, characteristics and marking requirements, while AS ISO 10545.2:2020 specifies how tile dimensions and surface characteristics are measured.
Small variations in tile size are normal and are allowed within the applicable Standard tolerances.
Q. What is the nominated work size?
Work size is the manufacturer’s stated manufacturing size for a tile. It may differ slightly from the nominal size shown on packaging or used to describe the product.
Tiles with the same nominal size may have different work sizes or calibres. For this reason, tiles from different calibres or production batches should not be mixed without checking their dimensions first.
Q. How do I check if my tiles comply?
Tile dimensions should be checked using the measurement method specified in AS ISO 10545.2:2020 and assessed against the applicable requirements of AS 13006:2020.
If there appears to be an unusual variation in size, check the manufacturer’s stated work size, calibre and technical specifications before installation.
Q. What grout joint size should I use?
There is no single grout joint size that is suitable for every tile.
The joint width should take into account the tile’s dimensional variation, whether the tile is rectified or non-rectified, the installation conditions and the manufacturer’s recommendations.
As a general guide, 3 mm or wider joints are commonly used for many standard ceramic and porcelain tiles, while narrower joints may be suitable for some rectified products when permitted by the manufacturer and when installation conditions allow.
Always follow the tile and grout manufacturer’s recommendations and the requirements of AS 3958:2023.
